Groovedown on Mac OS X

//Outdated. Please wait 1 or 2 days for the Mac Download.

With the help of a User named Mapmap17 we are able to provide an Tutorial on how to run Groovedown on Mac OS X.

What you need is of course the latest Version of Groovedown and WineBottler.

  1. Download Groovedown for Windows.
  2. Go to http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/ and download the WineBottler.app .
  3. Install the WineBottler.app and Wine.app by dragging them into your applications folder.
  4. Go to your applications folder and open Wine ( You can close the window of it )
  5. Right-click on Groovedown.exe ( of course after you’ve extracted it.. ) and theh Open With -> Other Program -> Wine
  6. Choose “Run directly in (…)”.
  7. Click on Go.
  8. After a while you should see Groovedown :-)
  9. If you want to open Groovedown with a simple Double-click then right-click the GrooveDown.exe -> Open with -> Other Program -> Choose Wine and tick the “Always open with box” -> Click on Open . After that this little Wine-window should appear, tick the box “Never show this window again in the left corner. Thats it.

you and Mapmap17 are amazing, you have no idea how long it took me to find a way to download straight from ‘grooveshark’ using a Mac OSX. This worked perfectly. Very mush appreciated, keep up the good work!.

    Prefix Creation exited with error
    Hi,

i have this error. can you give me a little support?
dont know how to clear this.
    thanks a lot!!!

  3. guest says:

something is wrong with this program. i’m getting an error too.

    • admin says:

      ahoi guest,

well, when u r getting an error it would be more helpful if u send us the errormessage. And, as we alrdy said, unfortunately we neither have a mac os nor can we support the mac users as much as we want to.
please be patient, everything will run smoothly once we released the java version. On ALL platforms ;)

  4. Lucia says:

Runs great! But only if you follow instructions from 1 to 8, the way described in 9 didn´t work for me… Maybe that’s why people are getting an error message. Please let us know when the java version comes out! Maybe an e-mail notification? Thanks for your hard work! Lucia

    • admin says:

      hey Lucia!

We cant confirm that the error comes with step 9, since none of us uses Mac.

There wont be an email notification, we are not a big fan of that. You will be notified by GrooveDown, when the new Java Version gets Released.

      Have a nice new Year!

      your GrooveDown Team

  14. Jonathan says:

It worked for me for the first couple of days. Now when I open Groovedown in Wine, I get an error from Groovedown saying “Is grooveshark down? Check it or update!”. I hit OK and then I see “If this error stays even if Grooveshark is online. CONTACT US!”The next message is “Error EIdOSSLCouldNotLoadSSLLibrary:Could not load SSL library”.

  16. gufugundu says:

Hey, there are still people using PowerBooks, with which WineBottler is not working (it’s Intel only, which is why KD couldn’t install it, I had the same error).
So what to do? I have been searching the web for solutions to rip grooveshark on Mac and I can’t believe there are about two dozen solutions for win and hardly any working ones for Mac. Bizarre.

  19. To all users who have the same error message as me, I found out what’s wrong.
I didn’t copied the .dll with the .exe. The two .dll files are mandatory for the app to run!
Just put the 2 .dll files next to the groovedown.exe in your applications folder!

    Awesome app!

  20. Jack says:

everything is perfect (except the look of a windows app)

  21. enefoo says:

  24. Gregory says:

Hi everybody, I was wondering if you guys could help me. I’m horrible with computers, but from what I gather, when you download the windows version of Groovedown you get an .exe file. When I downloaded it, it showed up on my computer as a .rar file, which is a text file when I click on it. Can anybody help me or explain what I’m doing wrong? I’m on a MacBook. Also, does anyone know when the Java version of Groovedown is coming out? I’m really excited for it, and it would be easier than trying to learn how to use winebottler. Anyway, thanks in advance!

  25. trixie says:

HI everyone! I can´t select a download directory I always get “Cannot create file Path not found”, anyone knows how to fix this? thks!!

  26. cloakedcode says:

As a huge fan of Grooveshark, I took some time to write a Mac only app that downloads songs from Grooveshark. It puts Grooveshark in a standalone app and downloads the songs as they’re played. Check it out at http://cloakedcode.com/swingfish.html.

    • admin says:

      Good work dude :-)
Thanks for also mentioning us on your Post :-P

    3. Error EIdHTTPProtocolException:HTTP?1.1 301 Moved Permanently

Any idea why this is occurring? I tried copying the GrooveDown files to the virtual drive c: again but with the same results.

    • admin says:

Hum.. when you updated Wine? Do you have the latest Version of Groovedown? So Version 0.65 ?

Scince it looks like there are many people having trouble with your walktrough, I’ll help out:
Just go through the walktrough above, and continue here:

    4. Go to your app folder, open WineBottler
    5. In WineBottler, choose ‘Create Custom Prefix’
    6. In the wizard, select the EXE as install file, make sure ‘Copy only’ is checked
    7. Wait for the the creation to finish, then open ‘Exisisting Prefixes’ in Winebottler
    8. Click ‘Show in finder’ on the prefix you just created (may need to refresh before it shows up)
    9. In the finder, you now should see a folder called ‘winebottler’, that contains the EXE
    10. Copy the 2 dll-files included in the RAR into that folder.
    11. Open up, and enjoy!

    To the admins:
Nice work guys, but I’m very excited to see a JAVA app. Repeating this every time you release a new version is crazy.
What would work also, is creating an install wizard. In that way, Winebottler can do the task completely on its own.

Using a RAR extractor program, I was able to install the latest version of GrooveDown. Using WineBottler to do this does not work for me. The comments by otownnigga should be removed, as they serve no purpose except to show immaturity.

Regarding people seeing boxes instead of letters, you can reinstall the Arial fonts to fix this. First open up a terminal, i.e. click Applications->Utilities->Terminal, then copy and paste the following:

    cd ~/Wine\ Files/drive_c
    wget http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/arial32.exe
    /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/MacOS/Wine arial32.exe /Q

If you can get in touch my leave me a mail via the contact formular.

My Groovedown.jar isn’t working anymore either. When I click what I want to search by then put in the search criteria and hit enter nothing shows up. It may be because I upgraded to Lion, has anyone confirmed it working on Lion?

  81. luk says:

the new version of groovedown can be started without wine.. just for installation u need wine. after installation u browse to the installed file an open GrooveDown.jar thats all..

  82. Flippo says:

    Same like PeterPan here.

I’ve downloaded the beta version of groovedown 7.0 with a jar file in it.
the jar file worked perfektly with my mac. But it stopped searching for music too.
the official version is only an .exe file.
I think grooveshark changed something and in the official version it’s fixed.

So is it possible to get the jar file of the lates groovedown version.
    That would be verry nice.

Great work, many thanks to the developers and merry xmas to everyone

    Hey,

I have a MacBook, or a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 I have tried both ways of downloading Groovedown…through the windows link and with the instructions at the very top of this page (providers of Groovedown) and the Mac link. Both say that it is a JAR file and cannot be opened. It says that I need the latest software of JRE, or Java, and I do indeed have that. Not sure where the miss is there…Any help would be great! I really want this running on my Mac!

      Hey Suzan,

i’am a bit busy at the moment that’s why i cant look for it myself.
I think in the Comments on that Thread here there should somewhere be given how to change the used JRE on Mac ( if not here you will find that on the Supportforum ( http://board.groovedown.me )

I think i remember that Mac got some Setting where one can choose which JRE it should use… and that it doesnt change that per default and one got to choose the latest one manually.. i don’t own a Mac that’s why i can’t help you any further really..
